Imee

Imee, a 45-year-old married woman with two children in high school, worked full-time as a teacher for the state of Wisconsin. Her health insurance covered her entire family.

Two months prior, Imee had noticed a lump in her right breast. After seeing her primary care physician, she was referred for a biopsy, which concluded that the lump was malignant. Her doctor recommended a double mastectomy with chemotherapy, but not radiation. Imee’s mother passed away from breast cancer when she was 25 years old.

Imee had many questions about what she should do next. She wondered about the value of getting a second opinion, her treatment options and finding support.  Using Pathways to Empowerment, she learned that second opinions can be incredible helpful, and especially important if you have not yet been seen by a specialist.  She also found great information about her treatment options and called the Center for Patient Partnerships where an advocate helped her find a support group in her area.
